Our staff wants our museum to advocate for certain bills coming up in the Oregon House and Senate (like extending the tax credit for the Oregon Cultural Trust). Do they have to do this as individuals, or can we use our museum's letterhead? Can we put this kind of thing in our newsletter? On our website? Are we allowed to do this?
Basically, the answer is yes, but there are certain things that non-profits can and can't do. Things you can't do include endorsing candidates and fundraising for political campaigns.

I know that the Portland Audubon does amazing advocacy work, so non-profits can and do make a big difference advocating for change. Learning where we need to draw the [legal] lines is obviously vital, but being a part of conversations that impact us, our work, our staff, our communities is paramount.
