    Deepwood Museum and Gardens

    Executive Director

    Full-Time


    Located in the heart of Salem, Oregon, Deepwood Museum and Gardens is one of the area’s premier historic preservation sites. The Deepwood Home and its extensive gardens attract thousands of visitors each year who are rewarded with taste of what life was like in the Willamette Valley in the late 1800s. Deepwood is an 1894 Queen Anne Victorian house museum on five acres of formal gardens and natural trails; it serves as a living museum and is regarded as one of Salem’s most favored venues for weddings and social gatherings.


    Today, we’re looking for an experienced non-profit executive director who will embrace the heritage of Deepwood Museum and Gardens to manage its day-to-day operations and work collaboratively with a highly-engaged board of directors to direct its future path. The person we’re looking for will wear many hats while managing the museum and gardens: home operations, gift shop oversight, grant funding, strategic planning, fundraising, programs and special events on small and large scale, volunteer coordination, membership, finance, liaison to the City of Salem, and board relations with the Friends of Deepwood and the Deepwood Gardener’s.


    The ideal candidate for this position will have a demonstrated ability to lead at the same time collaborate with others, manage multiple priorities, have a strong development and fundraising skill set, communicate calmly and effectively under pressure, listen and ask questions skillfully, and exercise excellent judgment and composure during emergencies or emotionally-charged situations.

    Deepwood operates with an annual budget of about $250,000 and a staff of 2.5 FTE employees.


    NEEDED INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

    • Any combination of education, training or experience that provides knowledge, skills,
    • and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position.
    • Previous experience in non  profit management, with preference given to those with
    • experience in administering living museums and those who have strong development and fundraising skill sets.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent written, verbal, and non  verbal
    • communication.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse constituent including staff, Friends of Deepwood Board, volunteers, and City of Salem staff.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to develop, prioritize and implement effective work and strategic plans.

    DESIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE HELPFUL IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

    • Museum collection management
    • Sponsorships
    • Volunteer management
    • Issues related to architectural and gardens preservation
    • Working knowledge of financial programs such as QuickBooks
    • Administrative experience
    • Knowledge of the Salem-area community would be helpful

    COMPENSATION
    Salary will commensurate with experience.

    Part-Time (24 hours per week with flexible hours, some evening and weekend work required)


    Position Statement:

    Be the team leader in developing an educational visitor experience around state and local history. Programming and events should be relevant, creative, informational, and have visitor appeal. 


    Qualities: 

    Applicant must have an appreciation and knowledge of history, familiarity with technology, great organizational skills, and the ability to tell a compelling story. The ability to think creatively and approach problems with a positive attitude is also essential. Applicant will be expected to work in a team building environment with volunteers and other community members. College degree required and some teaching experience preferred. 


    Duties: 

    1. Develop monthly programs, workshops, special programs, and guided educational tours. 

    2. Aide the Executive Director and exhibits committee with exhibit development, research and writing. Plan programming to support current exhibitions. 

    3. Assist with grant applications, grant planning, activities, and reports. 

    4. Develop community and school age education programs based on Oregon curriculum standards. 

    5. Collaborate with other heritage organizations and tourism groups. 

    6. Collaborate with volunteers on docent activities and supervise work when so needed.

    Organization

    The Oswego Heritage Council (OHC) was founded in 1970 and has the mission of assuring the preservation of Lake Oswego history and culture. Situated in downtown Lake Oswego, the Oswego Heritage House, along with its museum and historical rose garden make for a comfortable and friendly gathering venue for numerous, ongoing community meetings and serves as a beautiful rental site for weddings, receptions, and reunions. The OHC Museum brings specific historical references to light in order to educate and create interest in local history. OHC has two established annual events, the Collector Car and Classic Boat Show and the Lake Oswego Historic Home Tour, and a monthly lecture series.

     

    The Position

    The Executive Director serves as the administrator of the Oswego Heritage Council and reports directly to the OHC President and Board of Directors. The Executive Director serves as an ambassador for OHC in the community to support the mission of OHC. This is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of a dynamic non-profit in a beautiful community rich with history.

     

    Primary Areas of Responsibility

    Daily management of Oswego Heritage Council administrative tasks 

    Daily management of the Oswego Heritage House

    Management of OHC’s collection consisting of historic objects and archives.

    Develop and implement exhibits for the museum within the Heritage House

    Membership development and retention, both Individual and business

    Research, identify and apply for grant opportunities

    Fundraising support and development

    Respond to event rental inquiries and manage bookings and contracts

    Expand volunteer base

    Identify and pursue publicity

    Website administration

    Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations and schools.

     

    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s Degree preferred

    Experience in non-profit management, history/arts/culture organization experience preferred

    Experience with interpretation, museum exhibits and collection management preferred

    Excellent written and oral communication skills

    Ability to work independently

    Knowledge of social media and website management

    Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite preferred

    Proven leadership skills

    Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

    Willingness to work a variety of hours, including some evenings and weekends
