Coos County Logging Museum
Admission: Free, donations accepted.
The Coos County Logging Museum is located in an onion-shaped, shingled dome building at the corner of 7th and Maple Streets in Myrtle Point, just one block west of OR Highway 42. We also maintain adjunct displays at the Coos County Fairgrounds Museum at the foot of 4th Street, including a complete scale model of the huge sawmill that once operated in Gardiner, just north of Reedsport.
Our focus is the historical forest products industry, particularly logging, and especially as specific to our local area, which lies at the hub of vast forest preserves.
The museum building itself resulted from an early 20th century attempt to modestly replicate the Mormon Tabernacle in wood. The acoustics unexpectedly proved too capricious for church services, but are marvelously entertaining in a museum. Inside the handsomely carved Port Orford cedar doors you'll discover tableaux of typical logging scenes of the past century, structured around artifacts of the period. Nine large myrtlewood panels hand-carved by Alexander Warnock depict logging scenes in bas-relief. And literally thousands of photographs complement the display of hardware relics.
The museum, a non-profit educational institution, is staffed entirely by volunteers, many of whom hail from the logging camps themselves.
The museum is available for personal tours year-round by calling (541) 572-2565 or (541) 572-5218.
